New England Art News April 18
Reminders from RISCA. Deadlines for a big prize and grants. Art jobs across the region. Studios in PVD, residency in MA, national show in NH, portrait commission in VT. Plus, TWO artist profiles!
Happy Friday!
I hope your day is off to a great start, wherever you’re reading this.
Yesterday, I was invited to an art show at School One, a progressive independent school in Providence. Thanks to Head of School Christopher Hayes and Art Chair Jim Drain for the welcome, and to Director of Literary Engagement Diana Champa for keeping me in the loop about the school’s great monthly public artist talk series. If you have the means, you can make a donation to support their work.
Can you think of someone who encouraged your art practice? A family member, teacher, colleague, friend, or partner? I think it’s important to consider how those of us who are more established can be useful peers to others - how we can replicate the mentorship that benefited us. Sharing a coffee, serving as a reference, doing a studio visit, being supportive. These things are all basically free, but still can be extremely meaningful and impactful. - Michael
Two Artist Profiles
Katy Rodden Walker: Community-Focused Artist

In my latest piece for my New England Art News blog, I profiled interdisciplinary artist Katy Rodden Walker. Katy’s immersive installation Community BLOOMS is on view at the New Bedford Whaling Museum through April 27. I really enjoyed a recent coffee with Katy, who is an impressive and dynamic creative person.
Studio Visit with Painter Suzanne Schireson
For my GoLocalProv column this week, I had a wonderful studio visit with painter and UMass Dartmouth professor Suzy Schireson. A fantastic colorist, Suzy is the subject of a solo show at Cade Tompkins Projects opening May 3. Congrats to Suzy!
