New England Art News December 27
Calls for group and solo art shows around the region and beyond. Over $30,000 in funding and awards. An art educator's residency. Plus City of Boston seeks arts chief (but doesn't list a salary)!
Hello and Happy Friday!
I hope the holidays are treating you and yours well.
A couple items of good news to start things off: First, a reader shared with me that they were offered a job at a museum because of a listing they found here. Hearing this really delighted me and I’m so happy for them. Second, we recently surpassed 500 weekly subscribers! Thank you all for being part of this community.
If you’re a newer subscriber, welcome! Each Friday morning I share a list of timely resources and events through this platform. Tips, ideas, and questions are always welcome. If you know someone who would benefit, please consider passing this post along to them.
Editor’s Note: End of Year Giving and a Look Forward
I know you’ve probably received End of Year Appeal emails from dozens of organizations. But with just a handful of days left to 2024, there is still time to buoy the local art scene while defraying your tax liability. Sometimes we think, incorrectly, that a little donation can’t make an impact. For smaller arts organizations in particular though, modest gifts are immensely important. If you have the means, I hope you’ll consider supporting an arts non-profit of your choice today.
I also know that New Year’s is a day for reflection and sometimes for frustration. It might be a time we look at our art practice, personal life, or career and wonder why we haven’t made more progress in the last twelve months. Well, a new year just around the corner and all kinds of things are possible. I hope that if you’re feeling stumped or stagnant something great happens for you in the coming weeks. I’m rooting for you! - Michael Rose
From the Archive: Van Gogh’s The Night Café
One of the most popular posts I’ve ever written for my personal blog is about a favorite painting that you can see right in New Haven. Vincent van Gogh’s The Night Café is an enigmatic and fascinating artwork, and one that presages so much that came after it. Although I wrote this piece back in 2019, it still retains a lot of interest and shows the ongoing love for van Gogh’s work in New England and beyond.

Art Jobs Hiring Now
Employment for artists and arts professionals.
City of Boston Seeks Chief of Arts and Culture - Major post offered, seeking ten year’s of experience. Individual will shape direction of city-lead art initiatives. Editor’s Note: Bizarrely, there is no salary range, base pay, or benefits listed for this important role. Local orgs like Mass Cultural Council’s HireCulture page and the New England Museum Association no longer list jobs without pay scale, but the City of Boston has exempted itself from this level of transparency. Seems like the City should reconsider that element of the listing if it really values arts leadership as much as it says it does… But anyway, you should probably apply ASAP if you’re interested.

The results are in with 40% saying grants, residencies, and jobs are most valuable, followed by 32% who enjoy calls for art most, and 24% who like upcoming events best. Thanks to all who voted! And look for other polls in future issues.
