Happy Friday!
I hope you’re enjoying the warmer weather! This week, mentorship is on my mind. I’ve benefited immensely from the support and advice of so many people and I think it’s important to pay that forward. A couple of weeks ago I spoke to Suzanne Schireson’s class at UMass Dartmouth, this week I visited University of Rhode Island to talk to students of Annu Palakunnathu Matthew, and on March 5 I am on a panel about cultural careers for Rhode Island College. I am always genuinely honored to be invited into conversations like these. It feels really special to be entrusted to share advice with younger peers. We each have ways in which we can positively impact the next generation of artists in our region, and even actions that seem small can have a positive influence on an individual starting out. Can you think of how that could manifest in your life and practice? I hope you might consider becoming a mentor or supporter of an emerging artist in 2025. - Michael

A Celebration of Art Dealer Catherine Bert
This week for my GoLocalProv column, I wrote a profile of art dealer and scholar Catherine Little Bert. Cathy has been representing the work of historic Rhode Island artists for forty years. She has also been a mentor and inspiration to me throughout my career (my first experience in a gallery was interning for her!). I am so appreciative of her contributions to the Providence art scene.
