New England Art News January 24
Grants in Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. Two major artist fellowships. A residency in Providence. 11 Arts Jobs. 6 calls for art. A must-see show. Plus, thank you to 700+ subscribers!
Happy Friday!
First off, thanks to everyone who has signed up for this newsletter in the past few weeks. We’ve now surpassed 700 subscribers! It’s exciting to connect with so many new people through this project and to hear from readers who have gotten jobs or earned prizes because of listings they’ve found here. If something has been particularly useful to you, please let me know - or if there’s material I’m missing that you need, tell me that too. This week’s issue contains all kinds of events and opportunities. Please stick around ‘til the end to read my artist profile of the week.
As we enter a new political administration that is probably going to be aggressively anti-artists and art organizations, I hope this newsletter can be a place for resources and connection. We have a shared obligation to look out for one another all the time, but particularly in a moment like this. If there’s a way I can personally be supportive, please connect with me. Always happy to get coffee or a drink and brainstorm.
Editor’s Note: Join Me for a Reception February 6!
I mentioned last week that I’m partnering with the Warwick Center for the Arts on New Voices: The Next Generation of Rhode Island Artists, which will be on view through Feb. 15. The show, which includes 50 works by 20+ emerging artists looks awesome. It received a nice feature in the Warwick Beacon this week as well. Please join us for a potluck (and BYOB!) reception on Feb. 6 from 6-8pm. This free, public event is a great way to gather and celebrate our vibrant local art community. I would love to see you there! - Michael Rose
Show to See: New Digs at Jordan’s Jungle
If you’re in the area, I hope you’ll stop by Jordan’s Jungle in Pawtucket, RI to see New Digs, an exhibition of vessels hosted in a popular nursery. This event is the brainchild of Scott Lerner, who also runs the apartment gallery East Manning Projects. The inventive crossover is really fun. There is an exciting collection of material by a variety of local makers including artworks by Steel Yard Resident Artist Nyala Honda (pictured above) that leverage traditional ceramic forms as the substrate for surface decoration that celebrates singular contemporary drawing sensibilities and personal histories. See the whole show before it concludes February 17.
