New England Art News July 11
Join me for drinks with artists TONIGHT! A thank you to RISD and The Steel Yard. WaterFire show opens. Two residencies and grants. Drawings in wire. Plus, calls for artworks in the region and beyond.
Happy Friday!
First, a Thank You to RISD and The Steel Yard
Thanks to RISD for recognizing my teaching Art Appreciation in a recent news blast about the Continuing Ed program. There’s also a nice mention of my class trip to The Steel Yard, a great arts space. Thank you to two talented resident artists Kit Grindeland and Prinshu Gautam for talking with my students and making the visit so special. This course was a joy to teach!
Now, for the Editor’s Note…
I hope summer is treating you well. I spent part of my July 4 weekend sitting outside a cafe with a lovely artist soaking in the heat and the sun under a blue cloudless sky. My iced coffee perspired lazily onto the metal table, even in the shade of the trees. Something in the warm quietude told me that these summer memories will prove useful in our forthcoming New England winter. Providence is such a small town that whenever I’m out like this, some art colleague or acquaintance inevitably walks by and strikes up a conversation.
Right now I have an appreciative perspective for this kind of neighborly close-knittedness. We live in an age of technologically encouraged isolation and general social weirdness. Stilted perceptions of people we know from social media, but to whom we have never spoken, might make us mistakenly assume that someone is chilly or aloof. Trust me, I have been on both sides of that equation. Building real and nuanced connection is critical. As is talking to that person on the street or in the bar or at the exhibition opening, and taking an interest in their life and experience. That’s where community starts and it’s something we owe to each other. It’s also why I host Drinks with Artists every month. Join me for that tonight from 7-9pm at Small Format in Providence to meet new friends, connect, and form community. - Michael

Society Page: WaterFire Opens a BIG Show!

I had so much fun last night at the opening for Growing the NetWorks at WaterFire Arts Center in Providence. The show is on view through August 31 and is something like a family reunion for impactful makers in the Rhode Island arts scene. I saw so many dear friends at the packed opening. It made me grateful to be part of this community.
Artist of the Week: CW Roelle, Drawing with Wire
This week for GoLocalProv, I wrote about artist CW Roelle who works in wire to create intricate and dimensional drawings. A MICA alum, Roelle has been on the local scene for 25+ years and is in an upcoming show at 13 Forest in Arlington.
