New England Art News June 13
Thoughts on dating an artist. A live-work residency. A studio sublet. Vending opportunities. $50k+ in grants. Twenty arts jobs. Wide ranging art events. Plus, meet a painter!
Happy Friday!
A friend recently asked me to keep my ear to the ground for an eligible artist for her and I joked that I should add a personals section to this newsletter. “Painter seeking ceramist” and whatnot. I have been single for well over a year, so far be it from me to give anyone advice about romance. But there’s something to be said for creative people in love.
This weekend I’ll be in New York City to celebrate the marriage of two friends - both artists. When they were first dating, I marveled aloud at how complementary they were, how infectious their mutual admiration was, how truly happy it made me to see them together. There is something sort of hope-inducing about a really fantastic art couple. Words of admiration, acts of service, and splitting the studio rent.
On a deeper level, there is an innate and shared understanding of things that can be difficult to translate to a partner who is not in the arts. And when it’s really good, there’s also a uniquely genuine interest in seeing one another grow and succeed creatively and otherwise. Perhaps it is my specific resistant-to-reason-and-experience strain of naïveté, but I really do believe in that. We should all be so lucky as to know and love an artist.
In other news, I got a fortune cookie this week that read “Your greatest love stories are yet to be written”, but the second line was hilariously misprinted and nearly unreadable. So, that personals section might just be forthcoming… - Michael
Another Successful Drinks with Artists!
Last week I hosted my monthly Drinks with Artists and it was great! I met some lovely people and spent time with old friends. Thanks to RiffRaff for hosting and to everyone who joined. I hope that if you haven’t made time to attend yet, you will. It’s a great way for emerging creatives in our community to connect. The next one will be Friday, July 11 from 7-9pm at Small Format at 335 Wickenden St. in Providence. Mark your calendar now! No, really, right now.
