New England Art News March 7
An artist to know. Graffiti and risograph residencies. A gallery seeks sculptors. Many calls for art, prizes, and jobs. Art events coming up. Plus, join me for drinks next week!
Happy Friday!
New England Art News has now surpassed 900 subscribers! Thank you all for joining this community of readers. If you’re newer here, I’m Michael Rose, a gallerist and writer based in Providence, RI. My day job is managing the galleries at the Providence Art Club and I author the weekly art column for local news site GoLocalProv. I also participate in independent projects like jurying exhibitions, teaching, consulting, etc.
The goal of this weekly email is to circulate free art resources and news to a wide audience in our region. Content shifts slightly, but you’ll see things like art jobs, grants, calls for entry, residencies, prizes, shows, events, openings, invites, and more. I’m also very interested in creating real world connections in our local art community. Outside this newsletter you can also follow me on Instagram or Bluesky.
If you’ve gotten into a show, earned a grant, or found other opportunities because of New England Art News, please email me and let me know. I really enjoy success stories! Or, reach out anytime if you just want to connect. - Michael
Artist of the Week: Munir D. Mohammed
This week in my Inside Art column I wrote a profile of Munir D. Mohammed. Originally from Ghana, Munir has been active in Rhode Island for decades and is currently the subject of a solo show at University of Rhode Island. A RISD alum, Munir is a multi-talented painter, illustrator, and educator. His show continues through March 27, with a reception on March 18 from 4-7pm.
Join Me Next Thursday for Drinks at Kimi’s!
Each month, I organize a casual meetup geared towards younger and emerging artists at a bar in Providence. The next one will take place at Kimi’s at 373 Washington Street in Providence next Thursday, March 13 from 6:30 - 9:00pm. These gatherings are a really fun and low-key way to build community. If you’re shy, please say hi to me. I’m happy to introduce you to other artists. It would be great to meet you!
Womxn Project Call Extended: Works Due March 14
I mentioned in past posts that I am one of the curators for the Womxn Project’s upcoming Advocacy is Love event. This program is seeking postcard-sized donated artworks for a fundraiser to support bodily autonomy, LGBTQ+ rights, and more. Please consider donating a piece if you have the time and means. You can put down Michael Rose when asked which curator invited you. Thank you!
