New England Art News May 9
A major sculpture grant and a craft archive fellowship. Jobs, calls for art, and studio space. Highlights from New Hampshire. A photogram feature. Plus, Drinks with Artists is next Tuesday!!
Happy Friday!
Last week I attended Boston Art Review’s launch party for their latest edition, a jubilant evening of creative community. Boston’s premier contemporary art publication put on an incredible event that brought together scores of interesting people to, of all places, a former Uniqlo in Quincy Market. I saw great colleagues from throughout the region and connected with some wonderful new people too. Thank you to Kim Curhan for inviting me to tag along to this party!
It bears repeating: meeting in the world is necessary to sustaining a vibrant art community. Real connections cannot be formed entirely online, they also require happenstance occurrences like running into a friend unexpectedly at the bar while dance music throbs in the background. I am telling you this from experience.

Coming up this Tuesday, May 13, from 6:30-9pm, I’m hosting my monthly Drinks with Artists at Patrick Murphy’s House of Waves in Newport and hope you’ll join. The cocktails will be by Little Bitte, the brainchild of Providence gallerist Willa Van Nostrand. This is an opportunity to make new friends in the visual arts, especially for younger and emerging artists. I would love to see you there. You can share my post about the event on Instagram or share this email to invite friends. - Michael

Congrats x Two!
I’d like to conclude with congratulations. First, Keara McHaffie, who is one of my gallery assistants, successfully defended her MA thesis in Teaching and Learning in Art and Design at RISD this week. I was her outside reader and am so proud of her!!

Second, congrats to Isabella Carinci on receiving First Place in the South Coast Artists Invitational, which I judged. Isabella is a talented college student and I thought her small graphite drawings were full of sensitivity.
