New England Art News November 1
Funding for your practice, calls for art around the region, events, interviews, open studios, and a reminder to vote for art!
At just a month old, this newsletter already has over 220 dedicated subscribers! This level of enthusiasm is amazing and I’m grateful to all who have supported this endeavor. This week, I have two interviews, a whole slate of funding and job opportunities as well as calls for artists around the region, plus a feature on open studios coming up in Massachusetts.
I mentioned last week that I have a couple personal events coming up as well. Tonight (Friday, November 1) at 6pm I will be a special guest at Gallery 263’s Speed Networking in Cambridge. If you’re a Boston-area artist, please join me. Tomorrow (Saturday, November 2) at 5pm I will be giving a free art appreciation talk at Four Corners Gallery in Tiverton, RI. It would be wonderful to meet you in person at these, or other upcoming events.

Editorial: Your Vote Matters
Election Day is just around the corner and without belaboring the point I wanted to remind anyone who is reading this newsletter that voting for pro-art candidates and policies is incredibly important. Sometimes funding the arts is framed as if it is a handout to artists and organizations. It is not. Funding the arts is an investment in our community. Artists are taxpayers. Arts organizations drive an incredible amount of economic activity. Adding public funding for these endeavors to the mix of ways things are paid for is just sensible, and frankly downright cheap. If states can afford to doll out millions of dollars in tax incentives to billionaire-owned sports teams, luxury real estate developers, and the like, under the guise of economic development, then a few million dollars for the cultural sector couldn’t hurt, right? If you’re a Rhode Islander, you can Vote Yes on 5 to infuse $10 million into capital improvements to arts centers around the state. This will result in hundreds of jobs, most of which will benefit individuals in blue collar fields like construction and maintenance.
Meet Painter and Professor Richard Whitten
Rhode Island College Professor Richard Whitten is a Yale and UC Davis alum who studied under Wayne Thiebaud during his MFA. He has a show opening November 7 at RIC’s Bannister Gallery in Providence. I profiled Richard for my weekly “Inside Art” column on GoLocalProv.com this week. Read my piece then head to his show.
Please consider sharing the article from GoLocalProv’s page to pass this story along. It’s a great (and free) way to promote arts journalism and share artists’ stories.
A Conversation with Art Herstory’s Erika Gaffney
For years, accomplished women artists have been left out of the canon of art history. The endeavor to share their stories is ongoing and one person engaged in this work is Erika Gaffney, a Vermont-based editor whose Art Herstory project seeks to put work by historical and contemporary women artists front and center in inventive ways. I interviewed Erika for my blog this week.
