Happy Friday, art enthusiasts!
We have officially surpassed 400 members of this burgeoning Substack community. Thank you all for being part of New England Art News! If you’ve found a resource especially helpful, earned a grant, or gotten into a show because of this newsletter, please do let me know. I really enjoy hearing artists’ success stories.
In this week’s edition, I’ve switched up the format a bit with events first followed by art calls, funding, a residency, and jobs later on. Be sure to read ‘til the end for a couple of big national calls for art as well as an organization to support. Tips or requests for future content are welcome, please email them to me at michael@michaelrosefineart.com.

My Latest Column: Meet Figurative Painter Ricky Vasan
This week for my Inside Art column with GoLocalProv, I profiled RISD graduate painter Ricky Vasan. Originally from India, Ricky initially relocated to the US to pursue his BFA at MassArt and is now maintaining a busy painting practice in Providence. While in Boston, he earned Best in Show at the Cambridge Art Association’s National Prize Exhibition, and is already represented by a gallery in Mumbai.
Learn more about Ricky in my latest article. You can read and share the piece directly from GoLocalProv’s site. Sharing and circulating these stories is an easy way to support an emerging artist and promote local arts journalism.
Editor’s Note: Boost an Artist, Welcome a Supporter
Little actions can go a long way to building supportive community.
It’s the season of small works exhibitions, art fairs, and craft shows. Events like these provide opportunities for artists to share work and for collectors to acquire art for themselves or their loved ones. Direct patronage is one important ingredient in creating a vibrant and viable art community.
If you don’t necessarily have the budget or space for art, there are other things you can do to support artists. Share their news on your social media, ask friends to join you at their exhibitions, spread the word to those in your circle who are employed outside the arts. So many great ways of uplifting artists are free and easy.
If you have people in your network who have the means to collect, please encourage them to buy art from artists, please invite them to an art event, please introduce them to a maker or organization that could use that support. Through warm invitations, those of us who care about culture can welcome new supporters into the art community.
Consider asking yourself this question each day this season: “What is one way I can boost an artist or welcome someone new into the arts today?” - Michael Rose

Organization to Support: Rhode Island Latino Arts
For decades, Rhode Island Latino Arts (RILA) has shared the stories of Latinx residents of the Ocean State. Through a wide range of programming from art exhibitions and performances to oral histories and more, RILA does important and impactful work. They recently opened an additional gallery space in Southside Cultural Center in Providence, where they are bringing visual art to a new audience. I believe in their mission and I hope you’ll consider supporting them with a monetary donation or by gifting them something from their wish list before the end of the year.
