Editorial: What Comes Next?
With Trump elected to another four years in office, in spite of everything, it is important to prepare ourselves for what comes next.
In terms of the art community, it is pretty certain that a second Trump Administration will result in reduced public arts funding. For decades, a Republican dream has been the dismantlement of the National Endowment for the Arts as well as the diminishment of free speech among artists. The famously conservative Heritage Foundation produced a playbook for destroying the NEA in the 90s. Conversely, near the end of his last term Trump expressed a wish to have stylistic influence over public architecture. The next four years will undoubtedly be a tumultuous period for culture in this country.
Through inventive community-building and problem-solving I am hopeful that artists and arts organizations can weather this moment together. We will have to work hard to advocate for those among us who are most affected by Trump’s policies and uplift the voices of individual artists who will run afoul of Republican dogma, but it can be done. We will also likely have to connect with private funders, businesses, and patrons to support our work and the work of artists we care about.
For my part, I plan to continue sharing as much as I can in this newsletter and will keep using my platform to connect artists with assets and audiences within and beyond New England. If there are ways we can partner in this work or share resources to benefit artists, please never hesitate to email me. Your role as a reader in amplifying these grants, jobs, and more for your friends is crucial. We are in this together.

Meet Artist on the Rise Dominick Cocozza
Dominick Cocozza is a remarkable emerging artist based in Providence. A 2024 RISD grad, he has already been featured in 15 exhibitions, shared work at the US Capitol, and more. I profiled Dominick for my weekly “Inside Art” column on GoLocalProv.com this week. Read my piece about him and consider sharing his work with your network.
Please consider sharing the article from GoLocalProv’s page to pass this story along. It’s a great (and free) way to promote arts journalism and share artists’ stories.

Artist of the Week: Rowan Raskin
In a wonderful anecdote reflecting how small the art community is, I recently was admiring a couple of artworks featured at East Manning Projects in Providence and then just a couple of days later met the artist by chance at Gallery 263 in Cambridge. Rowan Raskin is a 2021 RISD grad who makes mixed media works that engage with Queer identity and experience through the lens of an individual who grew up Queer and gender-nonconforming in Arizona. The works Rowan is currently exhibiting at East Manning Projects are inventive and immediately caught my eye with their fringed edges, punchy use of color, and directness of narrative. I hope you’ll explore Rowan’s website at www.rowanraskin.com, or follow them on Instagram @gender.outlaw.craft to learn more about their work and practice.
